falling flakes

I didn't realize how much I missed snow until this past week. We had a beautiful white Christmas, and even today its been coming down all morning!  These white days are  perfect for staying inside in pj's all day without feeling too lazy.
A few days ago my sisters and I were given the task of shoveling the driveway. This seems like an easy job, but my parents lane and driveway are both pretty big, enough for at least 6 cars. But we got it done! (not without pulling a few muscles, I should add :))
Snow or no snow, I hope this week has been just as beautiful for you, too!

a Christmas card video

Have you ever heard of a Christmas card music video?
Me neither! But I think thats what we accomplished with this little number. We had so much fun putting it together and being goofy around the house. I think it could be the start of a new holiday tradition :)

I hope you have a wonderful holiday with loved ones, doing whatever it is you do!
Merry Christmas xox

a random field

Let me preface this little paragraph by stating that my little sister is awesome with a camera. She is 100% self taught and! (as you can see.)

So last week Kevin and I commissioned her to take a few shots of us together in a random field. (It was supposed to be an old barn, but after getting shot down by the old man who owned said barn, we figured a field would be fine :))
I'm looking forward to incorparating some of these photos into a blog layout, but to be honest I'm feeling pretty lazy when it comes to blog world lately. I'll blame it on the holidays and probably put off making any changes until after the new year. At least I'm being honest, right?

In other news, we've spent the better part of this week catching up with friends, visiting with family, trying not to freeze, and I'm  finishing whats got to be the 80th JFK book I've read in my 22 years. (Bill O'reilly's Killing Kennedy)
So, yeah. I'm spending the week before Christmas reading up on dead Presidents, okay? If its wrong, then I don't want to be right!

our new space

The past few days have been spent unpacking boxes, piling furniture into storage, and finding a space for all of our things. I think the room is starting to feel more like our own. The space is small, but open and cozy. We are so grateful to my parents for letting us stay during this transition time. I think we are going to make some good memories here. Our dogs love the big back yard they are able to run around in without their leashes! I'm also looking forward to catching up with some friends around here who we haven't seen in awhile.

Also, we've kept the news on for updates about Fridays tragedy. I really can't imagine what people in that small town are feeling. It is so heartbreaking, and I find myself not wanting to think about it for too long. I'm just trying to remember the families in my prayers and finding comfort in the fact that their little ones are in a beautiful place now.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

country ride

On one of our last days in Mississippi we visited some friends at their beautiful home in the country. They took us out to ride a few of their many horses. Kevin snapped these pictures of my sister and I while we were out.
It was the perfect break from our crazy week of packing and saying goodbyes. We were very lucky to be able to soak in the fresh outdoor air and ride around on their beautiful horses.
(*side note* these pictures were taken a bit before the horses got really excited and started galloping around the pasture! We were lucky to not get thrown off, but it caused for a good story :))

Last night we arrived home to PA after 2 long days of travel. We are still unpacking boxes and getting everything settled into its place.
Hopefully I'll put some pictures of our new space up this week!

Goodbye Mississippi

I knew I'd be pretty absent from the 'ole blog this week.
From finishing out my last days at work, to Christmas parties & saying goodbye to friends, to my sweet Mom & sister arriving in town; we've been crazy over here! But all in the best ways.
On Monday we will pack up the truck and begin our 2 day and 1,000 mile trip home. People keep asking me how it feels and I can only say 'bittersweet.' So sad to close the door on our time here, but happy to be by family and begin the next chapter.
It's my last time signing off from the South! I'll be back when we've settled in and I'm sure it'll be at least 20 degrees less than what I'm used to :)
Have a great weekend!

life lessons & chicken

While packing up the apartment the past few days I've been reflecting a lot on our time here. Living in the south for the past 2 years has been a great experience. Kevin and I have learned a lot about each other as well as about people in general. It has taught me many things that I hope to take with me long after we're gone. The 2 main things I could think of that I wish to take away from our time here are manners & friendliness.

Don't judge my parents too harshly, I did have manners before we moved here! But I never said things like 'yes ma'am, no sir' etc. The only time I heard people talk like that before were in the military. But here, manners like that are ingrained in even the youngest children. I still get picked on by my coworkers when I respond to a 'thank you' with 'yep!' instead of 'you're welcome.'  Maybe I can pick up on that one in the next week or 2 :)

I used to find it so weird that people here thought northerners were so rude & mean! But from living here, and visiting back home I have found that people up north aren't rude, but that people in the south are just so nice! It's so commonplace to say hello to a stranger, and be friendly to absolutely everyone which is not so much the case back home. Friendliness and hospitality are a huge part of the culture here, and I hope to take a little bit of that with me.

Also, I hope to take home my new found love of fried chicken. There are chicken places everywhere!-- and I am definitely miss that.

Hope you have a great weekend, friends!

november hike

Life over here has been a bit hectic lately, to say the least. Sometimes an afternoon hike is the perfect way to clear your head and prepare for a new week. That's exactly what we did this afternoon! My jacket was totally unnecessary, because it was a beautiful day. I am so not used to such high temps in late November!
Now we're all geared up for a new week full of packing and prepping for the move. It's also my last full week of work (eek!).
Hope you had a great weekend!

thankful list

Thanksgiving for us was a bit different this year. It was our first year away from family (we drove back last November). Some friends of ours were kind enough to invite us into their home and join in on their family celebration. They let us experience a true Southern Thanksgiving, with plenty of food and football! It was a beautiful and relaxing day.
After catching a movie Thursday afternoon we drove back home for an early evening, because it was back to work for me this morning! I was scared for my first black Friday working retail, but it really wasn't so bad.

Just on a whim I decided to partake in a family tradition that my Mom always made us do growing up. She always asked us to list some things we are thankful for. Mine are mostly lighthearted, but still fun to remember to be thankful for the small things in life.

I am thankful for...

breakfast for dinner
a husband that does laundry
flannel sheets
a good cup of coffee

cats in sweaters
this mild Mississippi November
friends to bake (& devour) cookies with
my sweet Saviour and His many blessings

Hope you all had a lovely holiday with those most important to you.

a short break

So, I know I've been absent around these parts lately.
It seems like lately blogging has just been one more thing to check off of my never-ending to-do list. I started to blog as a way for me to feel a bit creative and let my writing juices flow without going overboard. I think I've maintained that goal over the past year or so.
And I know it's only because there is so much craziness going on now with our upcoming move; but I just feel totally uninspired when it comes to writing.
So I'm just going to take a little break from this blog for awhile. It might be a week, it might be a month. And then, who knows, I might find something amazing to write about and there will be a post tomorrow. Only time will tell!
Thanks for reading along, and keeping up with this life of ours.
I appreciate you!
(PS- this picture was from over the weekend. Kevin is very proud of his 'stache coming in for no-shave November :))

I first want to apologize for the lousy photo. Thanks, iphone camera..
But really, where to begin?
Kevin has been out of town for a conference, and left me home alone. After a long day of work on Saturday me and a friend decided to go see a movie.
Simple enough, right?

As soon as I slammed the door behind us on the way out I realized my keys were on the wrong side of that door.
Kevin wasn't here to save me, and the only other person with a key to our apartment was also out of town (as fate would have it).
So instead of calling our landlord like a normal person, I took matters into my own hands. This picture shows me climbing up our balcony to try to break in. I am actually quite impressed by my own stride. I have climbed a few rock walls, thanks to Kevin, can ya tell? :)
But no matter my impressive climbing skills, because as fate would have it again (fate was not on my side that night) our balcony door which is never locked, was indeed locked.
Major Fail.

So I placed that call that no one ever wants to place.
Our landlord showed up in 15 minutes and became my lifesaver.
(Thanks, Bill!)

So now you see what happens to me when my husband leaves for only a few short days..I come completely unglued!
Anticipating tomorrow night for his return home :)
(And keeping my keys in hand until then)

Friday, November 9, 2012

On my day off this week I began the overwhelming task of packing up our apartment.
When I posted this picture, I got such a mixed response from everyone.
My PA friends were happy and excited and leaving lots of  ":)" and "!!!!"
And then my MS friends were much more sad and upset than I had ever imagined they might be.
When people ask how I feel about moving back home I tend to use the word "bittersweet."
I am extremely excited at the thought of moving back just in time for the holidays. To be able to see my whole family for Christmas and New Years, and to start back at school in the Spring.
But when I think of saying goodbye to so many sweet friends we've made over the past 2 years, my heart sinks.

Goodbyes are the worst.
And change is never easy.
Especially big change.

Last night we stayed at church a bit late to help clean up after youth group. Nearly everyone had left and I stood alone in the lobby. I remembered almost 2 years before when we walked through the church doors for the first time.
I had no idea what a special place in my heart it would soon hold, and all of the people who would soon become our dear friends.
I thank God for them daily, because I really don't know how I would've made it this long without them.
But every good thing must come to an end, right?
This turning of a page, onto the next chapter will be a great thing for us.
I do believe that.

Last weekend I helped throw a baby shower for a fellow small group member.
I'd never been to a morning shower, but it was so relaxing! I'd definitely vote for one of those in the future. We munched on quiche and punch & cupcakes! Anytime you can get away with eating a cupcake before 11am is a win in my book.
And she got so many cute little gifts!
I definitely feel like I'm at that point in life where everyone is either getting married or having babies!
Funny how that happens, right? :)

stay home

This week Kevin and I had a cozy night at home.
It involved hot tea, warm blankets, & a Christmas movie! (It's November, so I think we can get away with it :))
I am a major homebody. Look it up in the dictionary, and you'll see me with my snuggie on the couch :) But Kevin is more extroverted and would almost alway rather be out doing something with friends.
I like to think we find a nice balance.
I've taught him to enjoy a night at home & he's encouraged me to get out more often. (hah! How lame do I sound?!)

But for the extroverts out there; staying home on a cold night with a movie and someone you love is never a bad idea.
Give it a try this week!

Happy Halloween from the early 90's!
Kevin and I dressed up as Zack and Kelly from Saved by the Bell!

I thought it was a cute idea, and it took minimal effort. Kevin's shirts and my skirt came from the local thrift shop, I got the scrunchie at Claire's and everything else we already owned.
Everything that is, except for Kevin's giant cell phone.
I made that out of an old box spray painted white and a kabob stick hot glued to the top.
Pretty realistic, right? :)

Happy November!!

they call it a vlog

I'm going out on a limb here and posting a video blog! (vlog!)
(as you can probably tell in the video- I'm terrified)
Public speaking is my worst fear, and even though that's not at all what this is; it sorta felt like it!

Anyway, bear with me and find out what my 3 things I can't get through the day without are :)

Linking up with Erin and Ashley  today!

sale & storm

Our yard sale was this past weekend, and it was quite a success!
Ok, so success might be a stretch. We only made about $25--those yard salers drive a hard bargain! I sold a lot of stuff for cheaper than marked. But I was happier to get rid of stuff than to make an extra dollar. Better to sell it on the cheap than to lug it all back home, right?

Other than that, Kevin and I have had our minds on our families in PA. They are in the direct path of hurricane Sandy & getting slammed pretty hard right now. We're keeping tuned into the weather channel and staying in touch with them for updates. So far, so good.
Stay safe, all you east-coasters!

here lately..

..lots of planning for our move. We think we've settled on the date. Now we just need to run down that never ending list of things to do.
I feel like it requires an unlimited supply of time and money.
Here we go :)

..preparing for our yard sale! That big, cluttered, annoying closet that everyone has in their house (right?!)--I went through ours last night. We have a growing corner in our bedroom of things to sell. I'm hoping lots of tall dudes are out searching for clothes on Saturday!

..we're in the weird limbo between switching from AC to heat. The past few days I've been leaning more towards AC (it's been in the 80's! jeesh). But we're making due with the ceiling fans.

..trying to register for my classes in the spring, and lay down a solid schedule. Easier said than done.. But I'm really excited to be enrolled in school again. When I here people saying; "ugh.. have to go to class.." I'm strangely envious of them. We'll see how long that lasts :)

..heating up apple cider on the stove, with a dollop of caramel for good measure.

..putting together our Halloween costumes for this weekend. So excited for our big reveal!

Hope you all are having a great week!
